Probe towards Kingston Road (Mt. Vernon) - July 10th

A battalion of Federal cavalry slowly advanced south down the North Branch Road to Mount Vernon. As it approached the village, a regiment of Confederate infantry was visible. The cavalry advanced and was able to open fire from outside the range of the enemy infantry. The enemy infantry then advanced into the fields north of town and returned fire. One of the infantry battalions has advanced on the cavalry's left flank, forcing the Federals to change front slightly as they cling to the North Branch Road and their avenue of retreat.
