Fight at the Ford: Atkins Ford (July 17th)

Mosby's Rangers were moving south along the Germantown Pike, searching for the Kentucky cavalry battalion that had attempted to raid Jackson the previous week. The 2nd Battalion, 3rd Kentucky Cavalry had been sent out to look for Mosby. By chance, it didn't take them long to find each other.

2nd Battalion, 3rd Kentucky Cavalry heading north on Germantown Pike and passing through Round Meadow.

The Kentucky cavalrymen ford at Atkins Ford.

Mosby and the 2nd Battalion, 3rd Kentucky (Captain Stewart) engaged between the ford and the D. Atkins Farm.

Captain Stewart's Battalion falls back across the ford toward the J. Atkins Farm.

Mosby reforms into line and hold north of the ford.

The Kentuckians reform and return to the ford.

After fording for a second time, Captain Stewart's Battalion re-engages Mosby on the north bank of the Bull Head River.

Although taking some losses, the Federals press forward.

Having taken some losses, Mosby orders a withdrawal northward towards Dover, leaving Atkins Ford in possession of Dexter's Battalion

To run this engagement, each side was placed at the far end of the map and ordered to move by road to the other side. They happened to meet at the ford. The entire engagement was fought under AI without any intervention by the host. Mosby was not ordered to hold on the north bank, but he did. Dexter's Battalion was not ordered to reform and re-engage, but they did.  I had expected a melee, but that didn't happen. So ends the 1st engagement of Turn 3.
