Surprise on Madison Pike: Mt Zion Church - August 9, 2019

The 2nd Illinois Infantry, under Colonel Hezekiah Larson, starts marching south on the Madison Pike from Mt. Zion Church heading toward Sagarville.

A larger Confederate column is marching north on the Madison Pike, with the 1st Arkansas Infantry in the van, commanded by Colonel James Fagan.

The opposing columns meet near the Mt. Zion Church cemetery and the 1st Arkansas deploys across the road and opens fire.

The 2nd Illinois deploys at the cemetery and returns fire, as other Confederate units start to move  obliquely to take a position in the line.

After a few volleys, the 1st Arkansas makes an unexpected charge.

The charge hits home with a melee around the cemetery.

The 2nd Illinois breaks and retreats northward toward Sitesville.
